Sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ
Daily practices and habits from the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Starting with the Right Side
The Prophet ﷺ loved to begin with his right side when putting on shoes, combing his hair, purifying himself, and in all of his affairs. This simple habit — entering rooms, eating, and getting dressed starting from the right — is an easy Sunnah anyone can revive today.
📖 Sahih Bukhari 168
Saying Bismillah Before Eating
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when any of you eats, he should mention the name of Allah at the start; and if he forgets to do so at the beginning, he should say "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu" (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and end).
📖 Abu Dawud 3767
Sleeping on the Right Side
When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed, he would lie down on his right side and place his right hand under his right cheek, then recite a short dua before sleeping. This small act of following the Sunnah before sleep is easy to bring back into a daily routine.
📖 Sahih Bukhari 247
Smiling at Others
The Prophet ﷺ said that smiling in the face of your brother is charity (sadaqah). This teaches that even the smallest, most effortless acts of kindness — like a genuine smile — carry real reward in Islam.
📖 Jami at-Tirmidhi 1956
Removing Harm from the Path
The Prophet ﷺ described faith as having over seventy branches, the lowest of which is removing something harmful from the road. A thorn, a stone, or rubbish on a footpath — clearing it away is a tiny act that the Prophet ﷺ counted as a branch of faith.
📖 Sahih Muslim 35
Reciting Dua Before Leaving the House
The Prophet ﷺ taught a short dua for leaving the house: "In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no power and no strength except with Allah." He said that whoever says this is told: you are guided, sufficed, and protected.
📖 Abu Dawud 5095
Visiting the Sick
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever visits a sick person remains, as it were, in the fruit orchards of Paradise until he returns. Checking in on a sick relative, friend, or neighbour is a simple Sunnah with a beautiful promised reward.
📖 Sahih Muslim 2568
Trimming the Nails and Cleanliness
Among the acts of natural human disposition (fitrah) mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ is trimming the nails, along with circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, and trimming the moustache — simple acts of personal cleanliness the Prophet ﷺ encouraged regularly.
